Carlenia Ivory-Cantey: An Educational Opportunity
Carlenia Ivory-Cantey, a longtime educator, organizer, community advocate, and former Charlotte City Council member expresses how the Gantt allows children to learn about Black history and culture in greater depth. Ivory-Cantey has been involved with the Gantt since its days as the Afro-American Cultural Center and has championed its efforts in providing programmatic learning opportunities for youth in the Charlotte community. She's received dozens of honors and awards for her community service, including the highest honor given by the state of North Carolina, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, which recognizes individuals with a record of extraordinary service to their communities.
